Use the method that matches the decision
Generative AI is powerful for language and unstructured information. It is not a replacement for forecasting demand, estimating risk, detecting anomalous behavior, or optimizing a constrained plan. These problems benefit from statistical and machine-learning methods designed around measurable outcomes.
The starting question is what will be predicted, when the prediction becomes available, and what action changes because of it.
Operationalize the prediction
A model score has little value without a threshold, owner, workflow, and feedback loop. A churn score might trigger outreach, a delay forecast might adjust planning, and an anomaly might open an investigation. The cost of false positives and false negatives should shape the operating policy.
Monitor input drift, calibration, segment performance, and the impact of interventions.
Combine predictive and generative systems
The two approaches work well together. A predictive model can identify risk; an LLM can assemble the relevant context and draft a response. A forecast can detect a future shortage; an agent can evaluate options across tools under defined constraints.
The architecture should preserve the distinct role and evaluation of each component. This produces clearer accountability and more reliable systems.
